WELCOME IN VESELÍ NAD LUŽNICÍ

The town of Veselí nad Lužnicí (6.600 inhabitants) is situated in the Třeboň basin on the confluence of the Lužnice and Nežárka rivers, 410 metres above the sea level. It is an important railway and road junction. It became popular with tourists because its location enables them to travel from and to four directions - via Praha, České Budějovice, Třeboň and Jindřichův Hradec. The town is surrounded by forests, sand quarrys lakes and by many small as well as and large ponds. It is an ideal place for river tourism,  water sports, fishing and angling as well as cycling.

The documents support the first evidence of existence of Veselí in  1259. Originally it was a property of the Rožmberks and then, for a short period, it belonged to the Royal Crown. In 1362 Charles IV. raised Veselí to the town status. In 1491 Rožmberks became the owners of the town again. Mezimostí is first mentioned in 1322, but as a town is known only since 1908. In 1943 Veselí and Mezimostí merged.

The church of "Povýšení sv. Kříže" (Saint Cross Promotion), the oldest monument from the 13th century, dominates the town. The Old Town Hall is the main building on the square and together with the Museum, situated next to it, forms an architectonic unit. The 16th-century house with three renaissance gables on the western side of the square used to be one of the oldest post offices where the postal horses were changed. Other remarkable buildings are the Chapel of St. Marek from 1754 and the Little Church of St. Florian from 1718.

In the town vilinity there are two nature learning trails leading throught the Veselí sand quarries and the Borkovice moorland which are the example of two completely different types of nature.

SUGESTED SIGHTSEEING AND TRIPS

The Veselí sand quarry lakes

You can find them 2 km from Veselí nad Lužnicí in direction to Vlkov. They are part of the protected area Třeboňsko. The lakes offer excellent condition for swimming, fishing, angling and surfing. And of course, the remarkable part of the sand-pit is the sand dune with its special flora and fauna.

The Nature Learning Trail Veselské pískovny - 7 km long, 14 stops

The Borkovice Moorland Trail

Veselí nad Lužnicí is the centre of the Blata region, the unique and special place. If you are interested to come to know its area more you can follow The Borkovice Instructive Trail. Within 6,5 km you will find the remains of the former peat exploitation and the rare plants. You can admire the beatiful smell of the swarm plant, the rapacity of the sundew or the grace of the moorland pine. You can also visit the picturesque Blata villages. The most beautiful village greens are in Komárov and Zaluží. The gables of the peasant houses, granaries and various decorations are the main features of the Blata folk architecture. Do not miss the open-air museum in Zaluží with the presentation of the original black kitchen, black smith s workshop and the marionette exposition and shop. You will find refreshement and the non-traditional accommodation for two people there.

The Frahelž Ponds

Northward from the village Klec, on the right bank of the Lužnice river, there are several ponds, mostly newly founded. Together they form an extensive water area separated only by dikes. There are the ponds Naděje (The Hope), Rod (The Clan), Horák, Fišmistr, Baštýř, Pěšák, Pražák, Překvapil, Nový (The New Pond), southwards from the Naděje pond are the Měkký (The Soft), Strakatý (The Spotty), Láska (The Love), Skutek, Víra (The Faith), Dobrá vůle (The Good Will) and Blaník.

The Horusický Pond

It is situated about 3 km south of Veselí nad Lužnicí being the 2nd largest after the Rožmberk pond with an area of 415 ha.

Bošilec

The village is situated above the Bošilecký pond. Under its dike you will find the Záblatský mill, that used to be a part of the squire seat. The most remarkable sight is the church, the oldest in the Blata area, with the whale-shaped pulpit.

It is opened after a mass on Sunday from 11.45 a. m.
